About the Chicken Slacks

From the best dive bar in Boston to the best weddings in New England

The Chicken Slacks wedding band portrait

The Chicken Slacks, a seven-piece band with horns, formed in 2004, inspired by the classic STAX and Muscle Shoals recordings of the ‘60s and ‘70’s. Think Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett, Booker T and the MGs. Over the years, we have expanded that vision to include funk classics, Motown faves, lesser known B sides, and a few deep gems from New Orleans. Think James Brown, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, and the Meters. Then throw in some Al Green, Sam Cooke, and Stevie Wonder.

A Chicken Slacks performance recreates the traditional emceed soul revue—energetic, non-stop sets skillfully arranged, with a powerhouse vocalist and a charismatic emcee making sure the dance floor stays full.

We recently celebrated the 12th anniversary of our acclaimed Thursday night residency at the Cantab Lounge in Cambridge, MA.

The Chicken Slacks have been called from the start to bring our tight Cantab show to weddings, corporate functions, ski resorts, benefits, and public concerts. We have played the best nightclubs in town– Ryles Jazz Club, Johnny D’s, the House of Blues, the C Note, and Church, as well as both Gilrein’s and Ralph’s in Worcester, MA, Platforms Dance Club in Providence, Rhode Island, 169 Bar in New York City, Carmen Verandah’s in Bar Harbor, Maine, and the Atrium Lounge at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

We have played over 150 weddings in eight states since 2005, and have become known by word-of-mouth as one of the most accomplished and professional wedding bands in all of New England. This reputation even landed us a gig as the wedding band in the 2009 film “Bride Wars,” starring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway!

Our name comes from an often misheard lyric from Sam Cooke’s “Twistin’ the Night Away”: “He’s dancin’ with the chick in slacks.” Our first bumper sticker: “I Went Dancin’ with the Chicken Slacks.”

Jeremy Valadez, music director
Our music director, Jeremy Valadez, has curated one of the most groove-heavy playlists on the web, pulling from the vinyl racks a rare collection of deep, obscure, funk– mostly instrumentals– from the 60’s and early 70’s.

The Shaolin Afronauts, Detroit Sex Machines, the Grease Traps, Oceanliners, the Nu People, Billy Ball and the Upsetters, the Soulfadelics, the list keeps growing.
